Indian POP stars - ADNAN SAMI
|
|
Adnan Sami Khan has smiled his way gently into the music charts with Kabhi to Nazar Milao.
The man from Toronto is an extraordinarily gifted pianist and a composer and singer par excellence.

Smile and the world smiles with you
A cherubic face and an ever-smiling persona belie the talent that lies buried in Adnan Sami Khan.
Rated by Swedish Radio and Television Broadcasting as the fastest keyboard player in the world,
Adnan is no stranger to fame and adulation. Recipient of several International awards such as the Nigar,
the Bolan Academy Award, the Graduate, etc. Adnan is modest about his own achievements,
“I am very grateful to God that he has given me talent through which I can praise him.”
This from a musician who was honoured by UNICEF with a special award and a UN Peace Award for a
song he wrote for Africa. Great men need no display!
A God-given gift
Starting at the age of five, Sami first learnt to play the piano on his father’s electronic piano. Of course
at that time his father hadn’t really allowed him to touch the instrument. But once he had the temerity to
correct his father, he gained free access to the piano. There has been no looking back since then.
Educated at London’s famed ‘Rugby School’, the grand piano in the boarding house honed his growing mastery.
Western Classical, Jazz, Pop all was grist to his mill. Even while at London University, from where he graduated,
he was perfecting his skills and exploring different kinds of music.
The first pianist to play Indian Classical music on the electric piano, his fingers moved so quickly over the
keyboard that one could scarcely keep track of them. His mastery over this medium was such that the magazine
Keyboard referred to him as the ‘Keyboard Discovery of the 90’s’. Royalty in the shape of the King of Sweden
and King Hussein of Jordan have been charmed by his performances.
Uncharted Territories
And yet this pianist cum composer cum singer is always exploring new avenues. Kabhi to Nazar Milao, in
collaboration with the legendary Asha Bhonsle, happened as a result of one of these musical explorations.
In one of their frequent meetings, Adnan played some melodies he had composed. And Kabhi to Nazar Milao
was born. Asha’s vocal callisthenics enrich this melodious album, which is so easy on the ears that you keep
coming back to it.
More on the album...
Romance is the essence of the album. Eight beautifully constructed numbers celebrate the various shades of love.
Tradition, contemporary stuff and fusion merge together effortlessly under Adnan’s expertise. Latino guitar, piano,
sarod, saxophone are only some of the instruments used to underscore the blending of East and West.
Looking at the future…
Another pop album with Magnasound and a world music album are in the pipeline. Can Hindi films be far behind to
cash in on a great talent? Adnan Sami has many offers to compose music for films, but he is not jumping as yet.
Whatever he decides, we hope he is around for a long time to delight music lovers all over the world.
