About

Born in Calcutta and raised in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Somdatta started learning music from her father, Late Jati Shankar Chakraborty who inspired her with two of her passions- Guitar and Rabindra Sangeet. In addition to music at home, Somdatta also started learning Bharatnatyam at the age of 4 1/2 from Mrinalini and Mallika Sarabhai at Darpana Academy- the academy of dance at Ahmedabad.

Performance

Somdatta has performed on various National Channels like DD, Starplus and UGC, in addition to numerous performances in All India Radio Ahmedabad. Somdatta has received various awards for her performances in Music and Dance. She has continued her passion for music over the years as she worked towards her Post Graduate Diploma in Management. She was a regular performer at Natarani theatre- a world renowned art and music hub in Ahmedabad.

Somdatta came to New York in 2002 after getting married where she is trying to balance her Banking career with her passion for music.

She first performed in the US at the Long Beach Bongo Sammelan (Annual North American Bengali Conference) in July 2003. Somdatta also performed at the Madison Square Garden, New York at the 2005 Bengali Conference in July 2005. She has lately performed at the 2005 Durga Puja cultural programs of Prantik (Columbia, MD), Garden State Puja (Jersey City, NJ) and at the Long Island Franklin Square Puja in October 2005.

Album

Somdatta's first album is titled "Uttarshuri" which is a collection of Bengali Rabindra Sangeet songs inspired by her "Mama Dadu" (Father’s Uncle) , the legendary Debabrata Biswas. Uttarshuri hit the stands in May 2004.
